Architectural Narrative
A new cultural landmark is taking shape in the heart of Prishtina: the Opera & Ballet Theatre of Kosovo. Positioned alongside the Palace of Youth & Sports and the Fadil Vokrri Stadium, the project introduces a new public plaza and anchors a growing civic corridor within the city. Designed as Kosovo’s first national opera house, the building will house four performance venues—including a 1,200-seat Concert Hall and 1,000-seat Theatre Hall—under a single roof. Wrapped in a flowing skin of photovoltaic tiles, the architecture draws inspiration from the Xhubleta, a traditional Kosovar garment, merging symbolism with sustainable design. The theatre connects to the existing urban fabric via a grand staircase and podium, welcoming visitors from all sides. Inside, a shared lobby lit by a central skylight leads to timber-clad auditoria, where sculptural forms and rich materials foster both intimacy and grandeur. The surrounding landscape blends hardscape and planted islands to create a vibrant public setting.
Visual Narrative
These images capture the spirit and symbolism of the new Opera & Ballet Theatre. Through a study of light, material, and spatial rhythm, the series explores the project’s dual identity as both a national icon and an open civic space. Wide compositions situate the building within Prishtina’s urban fabric—framing its relationship to the adjacent plaza, stadium, and city life—while more intimate views focus on material contrasts between timber interiors, soft daylight, and the textured photovoltaic façade. Particular attention is given to the flow and gesture of the architecture, echoing the movement of the Xhubleta in form and surface. Collectively, the images present a layered reading of a building shaped by tradition, performance, and public life.

Opera and Ballet Theatre of Kosovo
“BIG proposes a simple and pragmatic arrangement of the performance venues draped in a soft, undulating exterior skin of photovoltaic tiles. The theatre’s form is reminiscent of the free-flowing shapes of a performer’s costume and the Xhubleta, a bell-shaped folk skirt traditionally worn by women in Kosovo.”
